Hi
I am looking for the original source of what is now a mangled description on the revised Friendsreunited site.
Does anyone have a copy of the original full version, or know where one can be found, or recognise any part of the following extract, which starts and ends in the middle of a sentence
cy ( chairman of the West Riding Committee ) opened under the happiest auspices. The boys of the old school would form a nucleus of the new pupils and the headmaster, Mr. J.E.Shipley Turner, M.A. who had been in charge of that school for the last few years, had been appointed headmaster of the new school. The governing body contained representatives of Brooke's Trustees, and there was every ground for confident expectation that the new school would not only carry forward worthily the traditions of the old foundation, but would offer to the younger generation of Thorne and neighbouring townships those facilities for higher education so necessary to a part of the West Riding administration area rapidly growing in importance. All assistance appreciated.

Trinity Academy Results
I thought members, particularly those from the teaching profession, would be interested to read the results achieved in Trinity this year. It is seven years since TGS (Comprehensive) closed and the first set of pupils to go through the Academy from 1st Form (Year 7) to Upper VI have just received their A level results and confirmation of their university offers. Closure of TGS site on Multiply
Many of you will have seen the notice published by Multiply management yesterday announcing the 1st December closure of the facilities that host the Thorne Grammar School web site. If you missed it, a copy is available below.
The site was started by Mark Hepworth as an MSN Group in 2001, and transferred to Multiply in Dec 2008 when MSN Groups closed. It has been used to organise 3 major reunions each attracting hundreds of former pupils, and dozens of smaller reunions of friends and single year groups. It has provided a forum for an exchange of views on a surprising number of topics over a period of nearly twelve years. It has reunited many old friends and created many new ones. And it has provided an archive of photographs and documents consisting of nearly 3,000 images and text files. These archives are by far the most popular feature of the site, attracting many more visitors than any other feature.
The present administrators have run the site for the last 10 years, and organised the transfer of the site in 2008. Being conscious of the difficulty of finding a new host who will provide equivalent facilities at no cost to the members, they have decided that they will take no action to keep the TGS site in operation after December 1st.
But they will offer every assistance possible to anyone who wishes to take on the challenge of finding and managing a new TGS site, including any help required to transfer documents, photos and other records pertinent to TGS. We have yet to see precisely what migration or download software Multiply will provide to facilitate the transfer of the site (see the notice below).
In the absence of a volunteer to take on the task, the site will no longer exist after 1st December.

As most of you are probably aware, Multiply's mission has evolved over the past year and a half to become the biggest and most beloved ecommerce marketplace in two very exciting markets, Indonesia and the Philippines. As our focus has shifted, we have reviewed all of our operations, and made some decisions that will affect everyone here.
- From December 1st, we will unfortunately no longer be able to support Multiply in its current form - notably we will be removing the social networking and content sharing part of Multiply (photos, videos, blogs, social messaging, etc.). We have decided to discontinue providing and hosting these services, as we have concluded that other Internet sites who are committed to social networking services will do a better job serving you than we can.
- For our existing users of social networking features, we will be providing easy ways for you to either download your stuff (photos, blogs, content, etc), or migrate it to other online services. We'll announce the precise details shortly. It will be your choice whether to download, migrate or just let your content lapse (and get deleted).
- For our existing ecommerce users (both buyers and sellers) in Indonesia and the Philippines, there will be no action required.
- Regarding any existing Multiply Premium subscriptions we will refund any unused balance, and apologize for any inconvenience this will cause. Please contact customer service to request a refund. Note that this is for Multiply Premium, not the ecommerce related Multiply Trust product.
I am aware of how disruptive this news may be, and understand the disappointment that it may cause. Ultimately this was a business decision, critical to our to success moving forward. Instead, we are excited to pursue our own mission to give the 350 million consumers in Indonesia and the Philippines a great way to buy and sell items online. Our singular focus now is for Multiply to retain its status as a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia in the years ahead.
I suspect that many of you will not like this news, and am sorry to have to deliver it now. I hope that you will be able to understand the reasons for our decision and thank you for being a part of the Multiply community over the past eight years.

Olympics
Anyone from Thorne going to the Olympics? I have tickets for the Eventing dressage and Xc.
Travelling by train, tube, river Clipper ship and coach over 2 days. Should be interesting if it all works out! Getting quite excited by it all now. Unfortunately not like normal Horse Trials as there are no stalls to spend all our money on so at least it will be cheaper than usual!

Jubilee
I went to London to see the pageant and to go to my son's street party. He lives at no.7 and I got chatting to the man from no.22. He has lived there for 40 years. I asked him where he was from and he said " a little village in Yorkshire" which of course turned out to be Thorne. He went to TGS and left the year after me in 1958. He is Bob Robinso. He has an older sister. Ros, who still lives in Thorne and brothers, one called Paul. He became a headmaster and taught abroad for a number of years. Coincidence or not?

The Grammar School
Did anyone else see the two part documentary on the Grammar School on BBC4. If not you can catch up on the BBC IPlayer by following this link:
If you did see it, what did you think?
[ Added on 20 Jan at 19:52. Well, I'm sorry about the link. When I put it there a few days ago, it took you to a page on the iPlayer site that allowed you to play either or both episodes. But now, it seems, the BBC has decided to remove the programmes and has replaced them with a couple of very brief descriptions of the programmes].

Did The Former Generation Care Enough?
In the line at the supermarket, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."
The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."
She was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day.
Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soft drink bottles and beer bottles to the shop. The shop sent them back to the factory to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. They were recycled. Plastic bags were not thought of, the groceries were packed in cardboard cartons that were saved & stacked near the check out, not flattened in a big power chewing press out the back of the store or in a strong brown paper bag with the name of the supermarket on it. Kids made a few pennies pocket money returning the empty bottles & selling all the old newspapers to the butcher shop for wrapping, now the meat has to be wrapped in hygienic white paper.
But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.
In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks.
But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.
Back then, they washed the baby's nappies because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in a 220 volt energy gobbling machine - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.
But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her day.
Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of a cricket pitch. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. They didn't have air conditioning or electric stoves with self cleaning ovens. If it was too hot in the house you went outside for the evening or hung wet sheets across the doorways to cool air as it came into the house and if it was too cold you put on a jumper! They didn't have battery operated toys, computers, or telephones.
Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn fuel just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They used hand operated clippers to trim the shrubs. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.
But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.
They drank from a glass filled from the tap when they were thirsty instead of using a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.
But they didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people walked or took the bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.
But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?
Many of us didn't have a TV at al!!

Weather Reports
Mick has suggested we start a weather thread, as many of us have experienced extreme weather conditions this winter.
Feel free to make comments about the weather. I will begin by sending our friends in Australia our sincere wishes, and hopes for a speedy return to normality. We will be thinking of you during the next few days, and watching the news which is keeping us up to date with your ordeal.
