Hi
I am looking for the original source of what is now a mangled description on the revised Friendsreunited site.
Does anyone have a copy of the original full version, or know where one can be found, or recognise any part of the following extract, which starts and ends in the middle of a sentence
cy ( chairman of the West Riding Committee ) opened under the happiest auspices. The boys of the old school would form a nucleus of the new pupils and the headmaster, Mr. J.E.Shipley Turner, M.A. who had been in charge of that school for the last few years, had been appointed headmaster of the new school. The governing body contained representatives of Brooke's Trustees, and there was every ground for confident expectation that the new school would not only carry forward worthily the traditions of the old foundation, but would offer to the younger generation of Thorne and neighbouring townships those facilities for higher education so necessary to a part of the West Riding administration area rapidly growing in importance. Olive Hooton (nee Bell)House Warren. 1 alpha - 5 alpha inc.
All assistance appreciated.

Ray,
ReplyDeleteIt's an extract from:
From The Doncaster Gazette, Friday October 3rd 1930.
Princess Mary at Thorne.
GRAMMAR SCHOOL OPENING.
Welcomed By Huge Crowd in Torrential Rain.
HER ROYAL HIGHNESS’S “EXAMPLE TO YOUTH.”

I recall Olive posting her version, which was a précis, about ten years ago. But I replaced it by a complete transcription from the original newspaper report. The newspaper copy was provided by Gerry and Jan (formerly Hind) Waller, whose parents were both present at the event. I also seem to recall that the reporter was a Mr Marston (father of Basil and Keith). The original newspaper copy did not scan well, so I transcribed it.
I've highlighted the passage for your convenience. I'll remove the highlighting in a couple of days.
Keith
Many thanks for that. I looked around the site but would not have found it in a month of Sundays.
ReplyDeleteOn a separate note, there is some info on the history of the Kensington Picture House in the back of the TGS magazine transcript produced by Thorne Local History Society, which is in the magazine archive. I sent the details to the chap who is renovating it, and he liked it so much that he wanted to know if the original could be found.
I mention this in case you know Laurie Thorpe or anyone from TLHS who may be able to help him out.
Regards
Ray
A name ... Kenneth Austin, TGS 1944-1952 son of the owner/manager of the Picture House ?

ReplyDeleteRay,
ReplyDeleteThe best source for the early history of Brooke's Trust is the speech given by George Dunstan in 1909 (copy on this website), and the last chapter of James Lawson's Book "Teacher's Tales".
