  1. The only time I took part in any Sports Days was this one, just before I left TGS. I was in the Obstacle Race. I came 3rd, I still have the certificate. The reason for mentioning this..........I was in Warren and in this programme I am placed in Mowbray in error. Did my 1 point go to the the wrong house?

I followed on in 1942, as many girls as boys passing the scholarship from our group, and we took it for granted that girls had the same chance as the boys when we sat the County Minor Scholarship.

    Rod,

I presume the record starts with the Upper Sixth (fifteen boys A-Z) followed by the Lower Sixth (about 24 boys) all from the Old Grammar School. The girls start to appear in small numbers in the fifth, presumably from the girls school that we recently discovered existed in Thorne Hall.

Note William Dobson Waller at no 10. I'll ask Jan and Gerry if they can throw any light on the subject when I'm next in touch.

I suppose that this should go under "Other Memorabilia". Are there more pages available anywhere? Would it be possible to get the complete Index from Doncaster archives.

  6. I did not notice the "Waller" comnnection! Thanks for that Keith. This is the complete index, I remember that the remaining pages were individual personal information of each pupil. I did not believe i had the right to copy these. I have telephoned DMBC archives recently on another matter related to the archives lodged in 2005. They have not yet been sorted or catalogued and are not keen on letting me sieve thropugh the boxes. I have a note from a display produced by Laurie Thorp on the "make up" of the group and of the staff names and subjects taught. I'll post this soon.

  8. It's interesting to note that Moorends doesn't merit a mention, although there are some pupils from there. Until fairly recently, the schools in Moorends were entered in the phone book as Thorne Moorends. I haven't looked recently, but it was still so in 1991 when I retired.

Miss Proctor and Mr Moore were still teaching at TGS in 1942; Mr Moore was deputy head if my memory serves me right.

I thought Gerry Waller had a brother called Bill, but I could be wrong. I seem to recall him from the distant past.

  11. Gerry confirms that William Dobson Waller, who was at the school in 1930, was the older brother of Rex and Gerry.

  12. Hello. Is there anyway to view the picture you are referring too.
William (Bill) Waller was my grandfather and I would love to see a picture of him.
