This album contains a copy of the press report of a speech given by George Dunston on 15th March 1912. This was a time of great local controversy about the future of TGS. The speech outlines the early history of the school and the attempts (in the early years of the last century) to persuade the WRCC and the Board of Education in Whitehall to establish a County Grammar School in Thorne. George Dunston had the press report of the speech reprinted as a booklet, probably for use in connection with his attempt to seek re-election as a County Councillor. Makes a fascinating study of local social history. The text is now available in the Library as a single HTML page, which may be easier to read on some screens . Copy supplied by Jan & Gerry Waller.

It is very interesting to note the names of some of the roads in, and around Thorne: True Love Close, Shoulder of Mutton Close, and Land's End Close. They are new to me; the others do have some connection to Thorne and have been retained in a similar form.
