Those attending the Brooke's Trust Tercentenary Reunion on 1st October 2005 welcomed the announcement of the creation of a new fund that will serve to keep the name “Thorne Grammar School” alive. The fund will commemorate all who attended or taught at Thorne Grammar School. It will provide an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for all the benefits we received at school in Thorne.
The fund will be available to Trinity Academy to provide prizes for achievements across a broad spectrum of activity. Recognising that the academy caters for children with a wide range of abilities and interests, we want to ensure that there are prizes for academic, artistic, sporting, community service and other education related achievements. If we are generous enough the fund will run not just to prizes, but also to bursaries to help the needy make the most of their opportunity at Trinity.
The Reunion event on 1st October 2005 resulted in a small surplus of £239. The Reunion events on 18th Sept 2009 and 9th October 2010 added a further £1225 to the fund. James Lawson wrote a series of short stories drawing on his own and other people's teaching experiences, which were collected and printed as a small book called "Teacher's Tales". Profits from sales of the book exceeded £2000 and James has very generously given all the profits to the fund.
Some of the people who planned but were unable to attend the various reunions have asked that their ticket refunds should be diverted to the new fund. Other alumni have made individual gifts. So to date we have raised a total of more than £8000.
The fund will be administered as a “restricted” account within the umbrella of the Emmanuel Schools Foundation. This allows the fund to take advantage of the charity status of the Foundation, with obvious tax advantages. It avoids the legal costs of creating and registering a new charity, and ensures that the annual administrative costs of dealing with the taxation aspects will be borne by Trinity Academy. The term “restricted” refers to the fact that the use of the fund is restricted to those purposes outlined in paragraph two above.
The first award from the fund was made to Victoria Gibbons for outstanding results at the AS level exams in 2005. It was presented to Victoria by Sir Graham Hall at the Tercentenary Reunion.
If you want to make a contribution now, you can send a cheque made payable to: "Trinity Academy" to: The Principal, Trinity Academy, Church Balk, Thorne. DN8 5BQ, with a note explaining that you are contributing to the TGS Alumni Fund.
